Last Modified: March 15, 2024 by Rachel

Play Pick a Card to infuse a bit of fun into math practice.

When I was a kid I loved watching the game show The Price is Right. I’ve always been intrigued with money and I love the probability aspect to the games on that show. So, now when my kids look a little lethargic or bored I like to add a Price is Right style game to the mix. One game I use is called Pick a Card. Math Review Game Strategy That Works: The Target Game

Last Modified: May 9, 2019 by Rachel

This step by step guide shows how this easy to play game makes any math worksheet or task card more engaging math practice for students.

Sometimes great ideas are born out of a moment of desperation. That’s how this target game came to be for me. We were doing some task cards on the doc cam and the students were completing them with their SmartPals.  I noticed that they weren’t fully engaged with the problems and, for lack of a better phrase, they were phoning it in. I had this suction cup ball sitting on the chalk tray and then it hit me. Draw a target on the board and then have the students try to hit the target. And just like that, the target game was born. I’m going to share with you how this easy-to-play game can take any worksheet or task cards and turn them into a fun, engaging math review activity. Therefore, I’ll stick to making a list of amazing activities that will give your students a whole boatload of practice with adding and subtracting integers. Read this blog post about 18 games to review for math in middle grades. Some great ideas for math test prep that are engaging and easy.

Reviewing is an essential part of learning. It’s how our brains remember and keep things from slipping away. Sometimes it can be very tempting to have students review by only answering test like questions and then going over them with the class. The downside of this is that it’s boring and not memorable. Also, it goes against best practices for teaching and learning.

So, I’d like to present an alternative way to review that is action packed, fun, and engaging. Of course I’m talking about games! There are so many ways to practice math concepts and skills using review games.
