If you’re not currently using mazes in your class, you may be wondering where they would fit.

Well, they’re great for bell ringers and reviewing concepts you’ve previously studied. I start every class off with a maze either to practice a prerequisite skill for what we’re studying or to do some cyclical review.

I also use them for independent practice and informal formative assessments. Other teachers love using mazes for homework assignments or in math centers. They’re a really versatile and easy to use resource.

My students prefer mazes over other traditional formats of practice. There’s an element of fun. Or, as one teacher put it, “Your mazes make me happy because your mazes make my students happy. Happy students get more practice and practiced students learn more.” That’s what I’ve seen, too. It’s weird how by changing the format, students don’t seem to realize how many problems they’re doing. It’s a pretty cool trick!

Digital Math Mazes

Starting the summer of 2020, each math maze we send out has an extra bonus- a totally digital version.

With the digital version, these mazes are built in Google Slides and can easily be assigned through Google Classroom (or other LMS). To complete, students solve math problems and then drag and drop the arrows from the side of the maze to show their path.
