Review Game Strategy That Works: Knockout Games

Read why my students beg to play knockout math review games!

Whole Class Math Review Game- Knockout Game

Knockout is a whole class review game with a couple of twists. It’s a favorite in my classroom and gets all students involved, while giving me a great chance to check on their progress.

Knockout games are a great math review game. Check out this step-by-step guide and see why this game is one of my students' absolute favorites.

Here’s the gist of it: a student chooses a character or icon from the screen and a question appears. Then, all students answer questions that are projected on the board. If they get the answer right, they get the points. Three times per game there’s a bonus. The student who chose the character or icon gets to then choose a bonus. They don’t know if it will be good for them or bad for them. Students love the bonuses, and I love that in a 20-30 minute game we get some really good practice.

There are even some people who don’t show up and don’t leave any work for students, and I’m not talking about the last minute, unexpected absence either. Bottom line- while we may not know when we (or a colleague) will be out, we DO know that an unexpected absence will affect us at some point during the year.

Last Modified: September 8, 2019 by Rachel

Students reflect on their learning in this emoji exit ticket. Check out this round up of strategies I've learned for math intervention over the past years.

Throughout my years as a math interventionist, I’ve used and seen a variety of structures and classes for students who struggle with math. In addition to struggling with math, most of these students in our math intervention classrooms have also struggled with reading comprehension and lacked academic vocabulary. Personally, I’ve worked with hundreds of these students. While each student is unique, there are definitely similarities and patterns that arise.
